Hand bookbinding
in Lewes since 1992
Bespoke bindings made by hand — theses, albums, portfolios, boxes, repairs and tuition — from our fully equipped bindery in the centre of Lewes.
A small bindery with a long tradition
Bookbinders of Lewes was established in 1992 as a small hand bindery, specialising in both one-off and limited edition bindings. For over three decades we have worked from our studio in the heart of Lewes, making things by hand the way they have always been made — with care, with the right materials, and with an eye for how a book should feel as well as look.
Our work spans thesis and document bindings for students and academics, albums and portfolios for artists and photographers, presentation and memorial books for organisations, and conservation repairs for books that deserve a longer life. We also run tuition days for anyone who wants to learn the craft themselves.
Every commission is different. We work in cloth, paper, and full leather, using traditional techniques alongside contemporary materials — always tailored to the brief and the budget.

Made in Lewes, by hand
Our bindery is based at Unit 12, Star Brewery, Castle Ditch Lane — a short walk from Lewes town centre. We are a small team of specialist bookbinders who have spent years learning and practising the craft. Every piece that leaves the bindery has been made by hand, to order.
