Book Repairs & Restoration
Our service covers everything from a small repair in cloth or paper to a full re-back or re-cover in leather. Wherever possible, we preserve as much of the original binding as we can — retaining the character and history of the book.
Small Repairs in Cloth & Paper
Loose hinges, torn spines, detached boards — these are the everyday ailments that shorten a book's life. We carry out careful, sympathetic repairs using archival-quality cloth and paper, matched as closely as possible to the original materials.
Our aim is always to stabilise and strengthen without erasing the evidence of a book's age and use. A repaired book should look cared-for, not brand new.
Enquire about a repairRe-backing & Re-covering in Leather
When a binding has deteriorated beyond minor repair, we can re-back or re-cover the volume in full leather. We select leathers that are appropriate to the period and style of the book, so the result feels like a natural continuation of its history rather than a replacement.
Original spine labels, gilt lettering, and decorative features are preserved wherever the condition allows. We will always discuss the options with you before any work begins.

Rebinding in a Sympathetic Style
Where the original binding cannot be saved, we rebind in a style that is sympathetic to the book's age, format, and intended use. We draw on a wide range of cloths, papers, and leathers to find the right match — and we take the time to understand what the book means to you before recommending an approach.
Whether it is a family Bible, a set of Victorian novels, or a working reference volume, we treat every book as an individual commission.

The best way to discuss a repair or restoration is to bring the book to our bindery at the Star Brewery in the centre of Lewes. We can assess the condition in person, talk through the options, and give you a clear idea of what is involved and what it will cost.
