Co-founder & Master Bookbinder

Jill Prole co-founded Bookbinders of Lewes in 1992, establishing the bindery as a small hand bindery in the heart of East Sussex. Over more than three decades she has built a practice rooted in the traditional craft of hand bookbinding — working with individuals, institutions, and universities across the country.

Her work spans the full range of the binder's art: from meticulous repairs and leather re-backs on aged volumes, to bespoke presentation books, portfolios, and limited-edition bindings made entirely by hand. Every commission that comes through the bindery at Star Brewery passes through Jill's hands at some stage.

Jill also leads the tuition programme at the bindery, teaching classes throughout the year — from introductory sessions on First Aid for Books to more advanced Japanese binding techniques. Her teaching is practical and unhurried, shaped by the same care she brings to her own work.

If you have a book in need of repair, a project requiring a bespoke binding, or simply want to learn the craft yourself, Jill is the person to speak to.
